On Wednesday 13 September, the parties behind PotatoNL, the new national potato listing, gave information and explanations about the establishment of the long-awaited stock exchange listing. In a very short period of time, the 4 parties involved came to a joint decision. All that remains is to discuss details.
About the establishment of a national potato listing much has been said and written. Behind the scenes, regular consultations have taken place with Beurs Goes and the other parties. We have always remained 'on speaking terms' with each other, the 4 delegates emphasized during a modest press conference on September 13 in Emmeloord.
Short period of time
Dick Hylkema (NAO, Beurs Rotterdam), Mark Brantjes (LNCN, Beurs Emmeloord), Watze van der Zee (Beurs Goes) and Dick Zelhorst (Vavi) were present to explain the brand new PotatoNL listing, which was launched on 14 November. starts for French fries potatoes. "There are only losers in the stock exchange listings file," says Brantjes. "We built something new from the ground up. That happened in a short period of 6 months. A national listing, with input from growers, trade and industry, is unique in the world." NAO chairman Dick Hylkema also mentions the realization as one of his spearheads after taking office, more than 1 year ago.
10 odds
PotatoNL will publish 10 quotations all year round from this season. A distinction is no longer made between 'delivery from land' and 'dry from the shed'. Those will expire. In addition to the well-known category 1 and category 2, it starts with a variety listing divided into 3 breed groups:
Goes wins something and admits
Brantjes emphasizes that the list of varieties may change in the future, depending on the market. Beurs Goes started last season with a listing per variety, with the aim of providing a more transparent market image. This allows a grower to see exactly what is being paid for which variety and for which destination.
Initially, this caused some grumbling from the trade, but that bullet has now passed the church. Goes gets his way in this, but must allow category 2 and input from the industry. Previously, those were 2 important points on which it broke. If a transaction made for Agria, for example, is listed, it will be included in both category 1 and the variety listing.
Equal standards
In addition to the 2 well-known categories and variety quotations, there are: export 40 millimeters upwards, oversized seed potatoes 45 millimeters upwards, sorted chips potatoes, product for the dry industry (flakes) and animal feed. So a total of 10 entries. The standards that have already been drawn up are not affected.
Quotation every two weeks
Beurs Goes meets in Colijnsplaat on Tuesdays. The northern input from Emmeloord will follow on Thursday. Watze van der Zee will remain the moderator for the south. In the north it is Maas van den Heuvel.
The listing committee consists of 2 growers, in addition to 2 people from the trade and 4 from the industry. In short: 2 from south and 2 from north. A workable and practical number, the organization says. Who they are is not yet known. Brantjes does say that talks are at an advanced stage. Contact is maintained by telephone. There are strict rules of the game that are supervised by a steering committee and board.
Consequence EEX unknown
What remains for the organization is 'fine tuning'. The stock exchange committee does not yet know how the EEX will pick up the listing in Leipzig. "How the EEX will weigh the listing for the cash settlement is unknown," said Dick Zelhorst. "A correction is applied to the listing by the stock exchange. We have no influence on this. Now the Dutch contribution counts for 25%, in addition to Belgium, Germany and France."
The committee has not yet received a response from the members, so shortly after the launch. During the annual meeting, the LNCN members, about 700 in total, expressed their positive opinion about 1 national listing. The variety listing attempts to create transparency, but the transactions are not made public individually.
