The Dutch processing industry processed 331.100 tons of potatoes in August. The majority of this results in pre-baked product, good for a volume of 158.400 tons. Of the total, 136.700 tons were imported. The processing figure is therefore 39.400 tonnes higher than in the same month last year.
More foreign supply
In 2017, 31 million tons of potatoes were processed up to and including August 2,7, 154.000 tons more than was the case in the first 8 months of 2017. The import of potatoes from abroad has been higher. More than 1 million tons, compared to 917.000 tons in 2016.
4 million tons barrier broken
If we look at the period between September 2016 and August 2017, the figure for 12 months is over 4 million tons of potatoes. These have been processed into 1,8 million tons of pre-baked product and 355.000 tons of other products. In the 12 months before that, this was 3,88 million tons of potatoes, of which 1,8 million tons of pre-fried products were also made and 380.000 tons of other products.
Conflicting figures
Despite the figures that continue to show growth, there are also figures that show that the export of fries from the Netherlands on the world market is stagnating. For example, Brazil's 'anti-dumping ban' is hurting our industry. However, these were figures from June 2017, while BO Akkerbouw is talking about August.
