Threat to seed export

1 million for approach Meloidogyne

9 November 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The Arable Farming Sector Organization is making €1 million available for the 'Meloidogyne chitwoodi/fallax 2017-2020' plan of action. This was decided by the organization in the meeting of Thursday 9 November 2017.

The objective of the plan is to prevent further spread and development of Meloidogyne chitwoodi/fallax and to guarantee the continuity of seed potato cultivation. For arable farmers and growers, contamination means loss of yield and loss of quality. In addition, the root knot nematodes are a threat to exports, because seed potatoes must be free of quarantine organisms.

Steering group comes up with plans
In the period 2017-2020, a steering committee will draw up annual plans with activities such as: research, monitoring, demonstration and information, communication and project organisation. The first meeting will be held this year. The steering committee consists of representatives from LTO Nederland, NAV and the Pootgoed-strengthening Measures Foundation (PVM) and experts as advisors.

The decision was taken at the initiative of the LTO Seed Potatoes Working Group and is financed from the transferred reserves of the crop fund for seed potatoes of the former Product Board Akkerbouw.
