National Seed Potato Day

Emmeloord argues for its own potato center

18 January 2018 - Niels van der Boom - 19 comments

Delphy organized the third National Seed Potato Day in Emmeloord (Flevoland) on Thursday 18 January. At the opening, Aucke van der Werff, mayor of Emmeloord, called for more cooperation. By joining forces, he hopes that a potato center can be built in his municipality.

Van der Werff once again mentions the craftsmanship and enthusiasm of Dutch seed potato companies separately. "I notice that we still don't join forces enough. We pioneer too much on our own and we don't use the power of collaboration," says Van der Werff. "Are we really getting the most out of our international relations?"

It's time for a second golden age

"It is high time to start the second golden age and to make the nutritional value and environmental benefits of the potato known worldwide. We have to work together for this. If we don't do this, China, for example, will take over our role," says Van der Werf.

World Potato Center
Van der Werff sees Emmeloord as the self-proclaimed 'World Potato Capital'. "This requires a World Potato Center, a prestigious building where everyone who is interested in the potato can come together. The municipality cannot erect such a building itself, but it does offer financial resources, infrastructure and land. The initiative lies with the potato companies to realize this."

Exchange vacated
Things are not going well for Emmeloord and the potato sector. Not only does the storm (code red) cause visitors to show up too late, the tent with exhibitors that has been set up next to theater 't Voorhuys also has to be evacuated. The tent had to be evacuated. The program was continued in the theater.

I am still amazed at the tenacity of the mayor to make Emmeloord the potato capital. In the meantime, a million euros of public money has already been pumped in, with the result that Emmeloord is the laughingstock in the world potato market. Nothing is going well there, they can't arrange a parking space yet. Moreover, it has not yet attracted any business to Emmeloord.

a. twice a failed potato europe
b. They were not allowed to organize the potato europe congress despite a very expensive lobby (went to ireland)
c. There is no growth of potato-related business in Emmeloord

How long will the mayor keep this up, to waste public money and make a fool of himself.

It has become a real prestige project for B & W in Emmeloord. It should be investigated where the money is hanging on the bow. The organizer of potato europa (german club) must have very good reasons to stay there
old alderman 19 January 2018
I know it puts a lot of stress on the town hall. how long will the citizen continue to pay for the mayor's hobby
nop residents 20 January 2018
I can name hundreds of things that those tons can be spent on that directly benefit the community. not of that potato water ballet that is now being transferred to Germany

DLG is the organizers behind potato europe in Emmeloord. it is incomprehensible that people even think about keeping it in Emmeloord again. even if we get money, we still won't stand there. First, let's compensate for the damage we have incurred in the past two editions. or will the municipality of Noordoostpolder reimburse that for the Dlg

I would also like to get my money back. den hollanders makes you pay for an entrance card and then don't let it go on. can I pick it up from your mayor
resident 20 January 2018
no one who lives in Emmeloord wants that potato event. the whole neighborhood has been in nuisance for weeks. parking is a mess. mud everywhere people walking through gardens city center not accessible highways that fill up etc etc and then also tons of municipal money in it.

I don't care as long as it's not in Emmeloord. don't stand up to my armpits in moder for the third time and then see nothing
eplayer 21 January 2018
can someone indicate exactly how much money is involved in what exactly the municipality puts in that water ballet every time?
Bert Jan 21 January 2018
it concerns amounts of 200.000 plus at a time. We are going to ask questions about this at the council meeting

To a large extent, the Zuiderzee line is used for this purpose.

Zuiderzeelijn apply?

How does that work? and there is no better destination for that money. It's a shame to spend that money on that if it's of no use to anyone. It's better to spread that one day in the 4 years in which things drown for the residents over 4 years
drainer 22 January 2018
how much money is spilled for that honorary party of the mayor
community member 23 January 2018
dear draining, you have to think of a small million in the past 5 years

Stop whining. Wasn't it just bloody wet? Would you like to hold harvesting demonstrations on sand? Even with a n amac D2 I can still deliver good harvesting work there. Then you don't see any difference in machines, do you? A little more hardening would be a good idea
ING Lely 26 January 2018
Next time dig shallow watercourses for the public so that people can watch the harvesting demonstrations by boat.

relatively speaking, the biggest complainers are the exhibitors.
Also on the show I spoke to few complaining visitors.
The parking should have been better.
That was an error of judgment by the DLG organization (not the German arm, by the way).
If you put the plow in the ground at the Flevohof, the demonstration field also becomes a muddy mess.
The parking space there is also limited. I believe that for the festivities there, visitors often have to stand in traffic jams for a long time and therefore also take their bicycle with them. That is also possible in Emmeloord. Maybe something below the stand of the exhibitors?
Have you become comfort-loving office wimps?
This is about agriculture which always requires improvisation; It is well known that control freaking Germans do not like that. Please don't let the Dutch take over from them.

It was no one's wish for a day to be canceled, but it was sensible, even if the outdoor event could have gone on for those interested. It was mostly dry that day.

Walking through the gardens is something of previous editions. I have heard no complaints from them that interested local residents walked in through the back door without an entrance ticket.

Potato Europe will be back in Emmeloord next time! but better anticipate the weather risk... and take into account complaining exhibitors.
Taking control of the potatoes to be harvested was a stupid move.
Were you not interested enough that one day?

Incidentally, various parties have blown a lot of words about the blessings of GPS-controlled legs (precision farming-like interventions). Has anyone heard of the results? No weighing cells had been installed on the harvesting machines that harvested the majority of those experiments. How are the results determined?
Narcos 27 January 2018
Peter, looks like you're from the organization or something.
Such a big event cannot be arranged so badly as potato europe!!!

Terrain completely not equipped for precipitation, poor planning and organization of construction.
Harvest trial fields sold to storage, so harvest demos cancelled,
Parking completely jerky, it took people two hours from the temporary parking to get to the dredging at all.
Bad official organisation, shame for Emmeloord and the region as the potato capital.
A mockery for the exhibitors, especially the outdoor area and for all machines that have been towed there.

I am not advocating the Flevohof, but there is an event site here that is easily accessible with a large parking lot, and no wet feet in bad weather.

Last edition ATH a nice demonstration was set up here together with delphy, despite the potato boys not participating.

Look beyond your own polder,,, problem of many from your province.

Haha, that's where the amac would get stuck in the foliage, but since Drenthe determines both the onion market and the potato market, according to many insiders, this would be the right place for potato europe.
