Considering the mood of the last few months, it is indeed a powerful movement. There continues to be a compelling supply of parties with problems and therefore pressure on the market, especially when it comes to Fontane and Agria. However, Innovator also appears to be difficult to store in some cases.

Potatoes enter the alternative circuit

Negative influence
On the one hand, this has created additional pressure in the market, which has negatively affected the price. There are reports stating that the quantity of net potatoes delivered per hectare is clearly lower than in the off-field period. Many potatoes will end up in the alternative circuit, which may lead to some air later in the season. This currently translates into a higher futures market price. This gives hope for a possible recovery of the physical market later in the season.

A side note regarding the somewhat friendlier mood is that the various stock measurements (which are occasionally published in Europe) show that the volume of potatoes, which still have to be delivered in the coming months, is ample.

Stock lower
For example, the French stock of potatoes at the beginning of January would still be just over 3 million tons, 300.000 more than at the same time last year. It is striking and good news that the stock is lower compared to the 2014 harvest year (then 3,25 million tons), while the potato harvests (2014 and 2017) were comparable. In short: the delivery of potatoes in France is continuing well given the figures.

In Germany's largest potato state, Lower Saxony, the stock would amount to 2,25 million tons at the beginning of January, 500.000 tons more than last season. Even in the price-wise poor 2014/2015 season, the stock was smaller by 2,1 million tons.
