consumer price index

Consumers pay less for potatoes

14 February 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The consumer price for potatoes in December 2017 was about 4% lower than in December 2016. This has everything to do with the ex-farm price, which has been falling since July.

The consumer price index amounts to 2017 points in December 105, compared to 2017 points in July 124. The level of 105 points means that the index is 4% lower than in December 2016.

Producer earns less
The farm-gate price index stood at 2017 points in December 56. In July that was still 166 points. As a result, the price index has fallen by 66%. This is mainly due to the large harvest.

The fact that the consumer price falls less sharply than the producer price is because this price is composed of both fresh potatoes (table potatoes) and processed potatoes.

Manufacturing industry stable
The price level for the potato processing industry has fallen by 2%. The producer price index stood at 2017 points in December 119, equal to the level of 2016. Prices for the processing industry have been stable for years, because contract prices is being worked.

*The year 2010 is equal to 100 points and is included as a reference point.
