Seed potato sector receives subsidy

7 March 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The Potato Valley, the knowledge platform for seed potatoes, has received a subsidy of €450.000 from the province of Groningen and the province of Friesland. The provinces want to maintain the top position of the seed potato sector with this.

The subsidy has been made available for the period up to and including 2020. The aim is that The Potato Valley can then continue the work independently.

Challenges
The clay areas in the provinces of Groningen and Fryslân supply about 23% of the total export of seed potatoes. To maintain this top position, the seed potato sector faces various challenges. For example, the soil is compacting and the vitality of the crop is decreasing.

The Potato Valley was set up to support these challenges and functions as an innovation platform.
