The same issues play a role in the potato market in the United States (US) as in Europe. The increasing processing capacity of French fries producers means that there is a need for more raw materials. Low grain prices offer no alternative, so potato growers decide to grow more.
An initial estimate of the American potato area for this year shows a growth of 2%. This means an expected area of 926.000 acres, equivalent to approximately 375.000 hectares. If this becomes reality, it will mean an increase of almost 7.300 hectares; in 3 years the area was not that large. The area applies to the main crop 'fall potatoes', which is largely intended for the processing industry.
Potato states
The area is increasing the most in the two largest potato states (Idaho and Washington). In Idaho this is due to McCain increasing production, while in Washington the strong table market plays a role. The states together account for 2 hectares of extra potatoes, analysts think. The remaining 6.000 hectares are divided among 1.300 other states. The area is decreasing in 7 states (Nebraska and North Dakota). In percentage terms, the area in Montana is increasing the most, by more than 2%.
When talking about the main crop, it is about the Russet varieties. The increasing demand from the chip industry is encouraging an increase in area. An increase is also expected for Russet growers who grow potatoes for the table potato market. Mainly because wheat and corn do not offer a price-worthy alternative. Moreover, the American table potato market is at its highest point in 5 years.
Primeur cultivation
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) published the first acreage figures for 29 on March 2018. It only makes a statement about the area of 'spring potatoes' (prime potatoes), which the USDA estimates at 53.000 acres, equivalent to 21.500 hectares. This represents a decrease of 2.000 hectares. The government will not publish figures about the main harvest until the end of June.
