Data from the USDA Department of Agriculture shows that the stock of French fries was 1% higher on April 2 than on the same date last year. A third of the total harvest is still in storage. The total tonnage delivered is lower, but factories have processed more potatoes.
According to figures from the USDA, on the reference date of April 1, 6,78 million tons of potatoes from the main harvest (fall potatoes) were still in storage. This is a third of the total harvest. Compared to a year earlier, the stock is 2% larger. These figures include the stock that potato processors hold. The seed potatoes for next season are also included in the calculation. The latter item is estimated to account for a volume of 1,5 million tons.
Potato states
Potato state Idaho has the most supply. There were still 2,5 million tons of potatoes in storage here. Accounts for 38% of production. This is slightly less than was the case on April 1, 2017. In Washington, 1,52 million tons were still in stock. This is slightly more than was the case last year.
The total quantity of potatoes delivered since April 1, 2017 is 13,5 million tons. A decrease of 3% compared to the previous 12 months. Factories have purchased slightly more potatoes. This concerns 7,4 million tons. An increase of 1%. Storage losses amount to 980.000 tons. A decrease of 8%.
Canadian potato supply
The Canadian potato supply was also higher on April 1. Statistical figures show a 1,3% larger volume, totaling 2,24 million tons. Most potatoes are stored in Manitoba, Alberta and Prince Edward Island. Only in Ontario and Alberta are stocks higher compared to a year earlier.
In 12 months, 5,15 million tons of potatoes were purchased. An increase of 4% compared to the previous period. Compared to a month earlier, fewer potatoes were purchased. However, this pace is not an inconsistent picture.
