Seed potato trading house and potato cooperative Agrico pays members an indication price of €26 per 100 kilos of seed potatoes. That is a reduction of €5 compared to the 2016 harvest. The amount of seed potatoes to be sold was the same as last season.
The indication price of €26 applies to all barrels, delivered in autumn and from class S to A. The price is exclusive of VAT and includes an average premium, delivered loose. Grower licenses must still be paid from the price. They amount to an average of €1,85 per 100 kilos for monopoly varieties.
Higher licensing costs
De indication price came to €2016 per 31 kilos over the 100 harvest. The payment for licenses was then (€ 1,70) slightly lower, but the price is higher than for the 2015 harvest. it came out at €24 per 100 kilos. The hectare yield was 1.500 kilos higher this year (39,5 tonnes). However, the number of potatoes to be sold in the seed potato sizes was equal to last season. This is because the seed potatoes were very coarse on average.
The low consumer price has an effect on the seed potato price, because of the amount paid out for the oversized seed potatoes. The indication price applies to all potatoes from 28 millimeters upwards. The final price will be announced in June.
All markets supplied
General director Jan van Hoogen calls it a good indication price. "After a hesitant start to the season, we managed to serve all markets well." The wet harvest conditions for the seed potatoes meant that early destinations could not always be delivered on time. In the end, the cooperative did manage to deliver all the requested seed potatoes, it says.
The bad mood on the consumption potato market means that sales here are lower; especially for Northwest Europe. The French fries factories are asking for more seed potatoes. Agrico has been able to build its share from this. The trading house calls the supply and demand well balanced.
Area continues to increase
The total volume sold was ultimately higher than during the 2016 harvest, when the company missed 30.000 tonnes of seed potatoes due to a poor harvest. The area expanded by 3% to more than 13.000 hectares. With the 2016 harvest, the acreage also expanded by 4%.
