Again heavy rain in the southwest

25 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

A considerable amount of rain fell again in the southwest of the country last evening and night (24 to 25 May). However, the showers were very localized. Where 45 millimeters fell at one location in Zeeland, less than 20 millimeters fell at other places.

A lot of rain has also fallen in West Brabant and Belgium; on top of the amounts last week had already fallen. However, the differences are extremely large. In the north of the Netherlands it has remained largely dry and in some cases rain is badly needed there.

In the month of May, almost 80 millimeters of rain fell in some places in Zeeland, North Brabant and Limburg; this in a vulnerable period for the crop. Various insurers reported that they received many reports of crop damage this growing season.

Rotten seed
Growers in the southwest of the country indicate that quite a lot of seed potatoes have rotted, partly because they have been without oxygen for too long. Growers in Wieringermeer (North Holland) also indicate that potatoes planted at the end of April are just as far as potatoes planted in mid-May. Here, too, the excessive rain is mentioned as the cause.

De expectation is that local rain and thunderstorms will also pass by on Friday 25 May, but it is also reported that it is gradually becoming drier. The heat continues.Rain in the middle of Zeeland caused this flooded field.
