News Boerenbusiness Poll

Positive expectation for new potato harvest

June 22, 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 5 comments

The expectations for the potato prices for next season are mainly positive. This is evident from the Boerenbusiness poll. The reason for the poll was the low potato prices of the 2017 season.

through the de in. has been indicated almost 750 times what farmers expect from the prices for the coming season. This showed that 30% of the respondents expect the price for the 2018 harvest to be between €11 and €15 per 100 kilos. This means that the expectations are quite positive, compared to the prices of the 2017 harvest.

More than 25% of the voters have indicated that they expect the prices for the 2018 harvest to be between €16 and €20 per 100 kilos. If we add the 15% that expect the price to exceed €20, then more than 33% expect the potato price to exceed €16 per 100 kilos.

Realistic?
Is a price above €16 per 100 kilos realistic, or is this a desirable price? From an earlier analysis van Boerenbusiness it appears that the potato area in the EU-5 and Poland will not decrease. However, the same analysis shows that the total yield (expected) will not be higher than that of the 2017 harvest. This is because last year's yields are higher than the 5-year average.

There is still 30% left, which are a lot more negative. More than 20% expect the potato price next season to be between €6 and €10 per 100 kilos. Finally, just under 10% expect the price to fall below €5 per 100 kilos.

Doesn't tell me anything! Last year at the end of June we were still able to cycle between the potatoes on the heavy ground! We all thought we were going to have the worst crop in years. In mid-July it started to rain and followed the largest harvest in decades!

Sell them now for a price that you are happy with, they only grow in August and then it will probably be wet again.

The water reserves on the sand are much less than last year. Next week a heat wave, last week a lot of evaporation due to the wind. Already had 4 heat periods in the spring from which a lot of thunderstorms fell locally, but not on the sand. Beets, potatoes and maize are already experiencing drought stress locally and heat stress next week.
The Eindhoven-Lommel region has been running the reels for 4 weeks in potatoes that have not closed the field.
