The potato sector sold about 2017% more in the 2018/10 season, compared to last season. This season's potato export is therefore the largest in 5 years; Africa in particular has purchased a lot of product.
Nearly 60.000 tons of consumption potatoes were exported in June, according to figures from the Dutch Potato Organization (NAO). This result brings the total export figure for the 2017/2018 season to almost 850.000 tons, about 75.000 tons more than last year.
Approximately 45.000 more tons of potatoes were exported within Europe this season. Total exports within Europe amounted to 640.000 tons. Germany in particular was a major buyer (more than 90.000 tons). The country purchased almost 30.000 tons more than last season.
United Kingdom
The United Kingdom (UK) purchased almost half less in the 2017/2018 season, compared to the previous season. This was partly due to the good harvest. However, slightly more was exported to the UK in June. At this point, the expectations of the harvest in England otherwise very bad.
Africa also purchased approximately 134.000 tons more (25.000 tons) than last season. Mauritania in particular has purchased more (34.000 tons). Senegal also purchased a significant amount (more than 44.000 tons).
Top export again?
It is now almost certain that the figures for the 2017/2018 season will not be achieved in the 2018/2019 season, due to lower yield expectations. Last season there was rain after a drought at the beginning of July. However, that has not yet been the case this season.
Potato exports this season were at the highest level in 5 years.
