The Interprovincial Test Center for Potato Cultivation (PCA) in Belgium has recorded the first prices for potatoes of the Bintje and Fontane variety (supplied ex-country). They start the season at a historically high level.
The first quoted indication price for Bintje is €25 to €26 per 100 kilos, with €25 being the most commonly used. For Fontane, between €25 and €27 per 100 kilos is paid, depending on the quality and size.

In all cases, this concerns batches with a minimum of 60% 50 millimeters upwards, a minimum underwater weight of 360 grams and direct delivery from the farmer. The price of early and semi-early potatoes is between €25 and €30 per 100 kilos. PCA describes the market as fixed. The supply is very limited due to low yields and difficult harvesting conditions in some regions.

Such a price level for Bintje and Fontane has never occurred in the listing. Last year PCA started with a price of € 4,50 for Bintje (week 37) and € 2,50 to € 4 for Fontane. In 2016 this was €13,75 for Bintje (week 34) and €12,50 to €14 for Fontane. The previous highest result of the start for Bintje was €18,50 (2013). The 5-year average is €9,38. The ex-land price of 2018 is therefore 166% higher.
Price doubled
PCA recorded a price of €32 per 27,50 kilos for Fontane old harvest in week 100. The start of the new season is almost €10 higher than the old highest price. In week 34 of 2015, €17,50 was noted for Fontane. The 3-year average here is €12,66 per 100 kilos, which means that the current ex-land price is 105% higher.
