Major differences between trial harvesting figures

11 October 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The potato harvest is in full swing, which means that most trial harvesting figures are now available. It is striking that the figures show large differences. Time to put the numbers together.

Last week it already turned out that in addition to a low yield, there are also major quality problems with some varieties. In this overview, the updated figures have been processed into an overview.

PCA (Belgium): 33,6 tons
At PCA the last trial harvests were carried out at the beginning of October. The organization records a gross yield of 41 tons per hectare for Fontane in Belgium. When we convert this to a net yield, so that we can compare it with the other test harvesting figures, it amounts to a paltry 34,8 tons per hectare.

The net proceeds for Bintje, like those for Innovator, are even lower. This amounts to 31,5 tons per hectare. PCA notes that the percentage of floats in Bintje has increased sharply, which does not benefit storability. Challenger's net yield is 36,5 tons per hectare. The average of the varieties mentioned across Belgium amounts to a net yield of 33,6 tons per hectare.

Bruwier (Belgium): 39,2 tons
At potato trading house Bruwier, the net yield for Fontane amounts to 44,3 tons per hectare. Almost 75% falls in the size range 50 millimeters upwards. Bintje arrives at 34,2 tons per hectare, half of which is coarser than 50 millimeters. The average result then amounts to 39,2 tons per hectare.

Farm Frites (Belgium/Netherlands): 39,7 tons
from the last trial harvesting figures from Farm Frites shows that the average net yield is just under 40 tons per hectare. The lowest yield was 17 tons per hectare and the highest was 76 tons per hectare. The percentage of floaters of the 100 plots that Farm Frites sampled is 2,6%.

The trial harvests of Farm Frites compared to other years.

Aviko (Netherlands): 46,8 tons
De trial harvest figures from Aviko from week 40 show that the potatoes are growing out. The net yield remains at 46,75 tons per hectare, with approximately 80% in the size grading 50 millimeters upwards.

De trial harvest figures from Bruwier are more than 7 tons lower than the Aviko average. The average yield of PCA is even 13 tons less than that. This is partly due to the role of the regions. Aviko has relatively many growers in the Flevopolder and that probably ensures higher average yields.

Belgium vs Netherlands
Test harvests by Farm Frites and Bruwier show that yields in Belgium are considerably lower. This is supported by the PCA figures. This difference is partly caused by more irrigation in the Netherlands. Growers in the Netherlands state that they have an average of 10 to 12 tons more yields by irrigating, and that fits exactly into this picture.

What we can further conclude is that the average yield (of all figures together) is 40 tons per hectare. It should be noted that this is not a weighted average, because it is not known exactly how many plots include the various test grubs.

Aviko's trial harvest figures also show a clearly lower yield.
