Inside Potatoes

Market Bintje is developing disastrously

26 October 2018 - 8 comments

The Bintje market is developing disastrously. This is due to the very poor quality. The question is who can do what with these potatoes and what they are willing to pay for them. The number of batches that processes Bintje, which is barely suitable for chips, is extremely limited.

Only a number (reportedly 2) of Belgian chip factories have dragged Bintje out of poverty due to the shortage of Fontane, among others. Bintje's supply is excessive and that is because growers cannot (or do not want to) store the product.

The hot and dry summer leaves a trail of misery in the breed. In addition to the high percentage of floats, there are also damaged tubers. This is partly due to the dry harvesting conditions, which results in rotten tubers.

Oversupply
The oversupply of Bintje (in relation to the relatively limited number of buyers) causes the market price to implode (compared to other varieties). While recently €22,50 per 100 kilos was paid for Bintje (destined for fries), today (week 43) this is only an average of €16 (Belgapom €15 and PCA/Fiwap €15 to €19).

The growers who deliver the problem batches will also have to pay for the salt bath and transport afterwards. As a result, in some cases not even €10 per 100 kilos (net) is paid out. The price (net) is in stark contrast to other chip varieties (such as Fontane and Innovator), whose market prices are between €25 and €29 per 100 kilos.

Saving is not an option
Insiders expect that the supply of bad Bintjes will continue for the time being, after all, keeping them for a long time is not an option. However, due to the rapid (forced) removal and the large percentage of unusable potatoes (with a very low yield), it is expected that a large part will be cleared around the turn of the year.

In addition, there is a good chance that it will be very difficult to get a quotation for the Bintje variety in the first quarter of 2019.
