Harvest forecast confirms low potato yield

31 October 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The potato harvest in 2018 will be considerably lower than in 2017. The preliminary harvest estimate of Statistics Netherlands shows that a picture is being sketched that corresponds to the expectations from the sector.

Uit the harvest estimate shows, among other things, that the total gross yield of ware potatoes amounts to 3,1 million tons, which is 23% less than last year. Good for a reduced yield of 894.490 tons.

In 2017, the yield amounted to more than 4 million tons. The yield this year was achieved on an acreage of 76.452 hectares, which is 1.678 hectares more than last year.

A hectare yield of 40 tons was achieved this year, compared to 56,7 tons per hectare last year (-24%). This makes 2018 the lowest result since 2000; In that year, CBS started keeping the figures.

Statistics Netherlands has not yet published any figures on the yields of seed and starch potatoes. In 2017, 1,54 million tons of seed potatoes and 1,89 million tons of starch potatoes were harvested. If we also subtract 23% from this, these gross revenues come to 1,19 million tons for seed potatoes and 1,45 million tons for starch potatoes. Most likely, the percentage for starch is even lower due to drought.
