The DCA PAT Index was launched on Thursday 29 November. It is a quotation of potatoes suitable for chips, based on transactions made in the past week. The Index thus offers an overview of the average price over the past 1 days at a glance.
"The PAT-Index is an initiative of DCA-Markets and offers a reliable indication of the price of chips potatoes in the Netherlands," says René van 't Riet of DCA-Markets. "The Index is reliable because it is basically a continuous (i.e. real-time) quote of the trades over the past 7 days."
Use of completed transactions
The information of the PAT-Index comes from the Platform Potato Transactions (PAT). BO Akkerbouw enters all transactions (with a volume of more than 50 tons) made by the potato processing industry.
"The PAT already offers a good overview of all transactions made. However, the Index provides an average picture, whereby the various categories are not shown separately (as is the case with the PAT). The average volume is calculated on a weighted basis. says Van 't Riet.
The volume weighted average means that the trades in the Index are weighted based on grading and volume. A weight is also assigned to the different varieties (based on the seed potato area of the previous season).
An image of the prices
"With the PAT Index the sector gets a picture of what is offered in the Netherlands for potatoes. It is therefore a handle when it comes to marketing our own potatoes suitable for chips," Van 't Riet reports.
The Index concerns potatoes suitable for chips (up 40 millimeters) that are delivered immediately (within 1 month). If delivery is made later, a reduction of €0,15 per week applies. This is because of the extra costs for storage. At the moment, the index stands at €29 per 100 kilos.
