PotatoNL made a big step last week. What was the reason for this, and maybe more to come? The listing will in any case start in 2019 at the highest level of 2018.
This significant step was mainly reflected in category 1 potatoes suitable for fries. On December 20, even €33 per 100 kilos was recorded, which is a plus of €3. The bottom of the price range remained unchanged at €26,50. This means that on average the price was €1,50 higher.
For category 2, where quotations are normally higher, the top of the price range was €32 per 100 kilos. The bottom at this quotation was €30, bringing the increase to €1.
Buying pleasure among Belgian processors
The higher quotation is mainly the result of some purchasing interest from a smaller Belgian processor. This has recorded a relatively large volume (approximately 500 tons) of fries-suitable potatoes of above-average quality in the Northern Netherlands.
Whether this is an isolated incident or whether there will be more trade remains to be seen. If there is no more demand, it will be difficult to maintain the top end of the price range for category 1 fries-suitable potatoes. This may cause a hitch in the positive price trend.
