The supply of lower quality potatoes of the Bintje variety has been playing a role throughout the season. At the end of November, the price started to move, at the beginning of January the variety is reaping the benefits and now it is making a remarkable price jump.
In the market report of Tuesday 8 January, PCA/Fiwap stated an indicative price for Bintje between €25 and €30 per 100 kilos. This puts the top end on par with Fontane and Challenger, who also trade at €30. The most commonly used price is €25, with a fixed market vote.
Belgapom noted this week €27,50 per 100 kilos as the most commonly used price, based on business done by the industry. That price is €2,50 higher than the week before. In contrast to the French quotation (RNM), Belgapom uses 1 price for the variety; it makes no distinction in quality.
Quality
The price for Bintjes is remarkable, considering the specifications. This concerns lots with an underwater weight of 335 grams and a maximum of 15 floats. These are traces that an extreme growing season has left behind for this variety. This does not stop the Belgian industry from processing Bintje, because of the popularity that the variety still has in its own country.
seed potato price
Seed potato prices for Bintje class A have also been on the rise since mid-November. For 28/35 millimeters, €110 is paid per 100 kilos and for 35/45 millimeters that is an average of €80 per 100 kilos. A similar increase was also noticeable 2 years ago, when there was also a seed potato shortage. The price then rose to almost €150 per 100 kilos in mid-January.
Bintje's pricing is exceptional. It initially started at €25 per 100 kilos, and then decreased to the bottom of €15 per 100 kilos. The poor quality was to blame for this. From December the price went up again at a rapid pace up.
