When the first export figures of this season are announced, the same distance can be expected. In the first half of the 2017/2018 season, more than 344.000 tons were exported, compared to 1 tons the previous season.

Prices show increase
In December, the prices of the free seed potato varieties rose further. For example, Bintje in the size '28/35' rose on average from €90 to €97 and the price for '35/45' went from €59 to €65 per 100 kilos. This increase is not so much caused by large volumes, but because it is difficult to buy. The mood is fixed, which means that potential buyers have to dig deep into their pockets.

The trade in Spunta showed a smaller price increase. The size 'E 28/55' traded at $65 in early December and had risen to $66 by the end of the month. In the coming months it will become clear whether there is a seed potato shortage in the varieties grown for French fries.

Scarcity
Based on the sorting results, it can be expected that there is a scarcity. As a result, the prices of a number of 'monopoly varieties' have risen sharply. For example, a Belgian processor offers Innovator for €52 and Fontane for €68. Of course, a contract will have to be concluded for this.

The price difference between Innovator and Fontane is striking. The scarcity of monopoly seed potatoes may cause the price of Bintje to rise further. The credo 'better too expensive than not for sale' seems to apply there.
