Now that the frost has made its appearance in Europe, the supply of potatoes is drying up further. This while the demand for good chips potatoes is only increasing.
The demand that Dutch potato traders want to meet comes entirely from foreign chip processors. The German industry needs potatoes and has therefore made a step in price. The supply of problem lots and 'non-frost-free potatoes' is gone, creating new demand.
Belgian potato processors are also attracted substantial on the cart. In Belgium, the supply is (very) limited, causing prices to rise rapidly. France also recorded higher this week, with Fontane reaching €31. In Belgium, France and Germany, €30 has long been a thing of the past.
Processors on an island?
However, in the Netherlands the potato processors to imagine yourself on an island. Demand is limited and there is no willingness to pay more than €30. It is striking that all 4 processors report the same story. This can also be read from the PAT index, in which practically no transactions above €30 are registered.
However, these transactions must also come from the co-delivery potatoes, because the free potato growers can easily earn more money from the various traders. Fontane now costs €31 (except for Dutch processors) and Innovator and Agria are traded for €32 and €33 (direct delivery).
See more money
The question remains how long Dutch potato processors can keep this up. And then it is mainly important how long they can afford this, because the growers with co-delivery potatoes now also want to see more money for their potatoes that can still be sold freely.
