Not only is the potato price for the grower considerably higher this season, but the consumer also has to pay more. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) reports this in response to their own consumer price index. This shows that the price for all potato products is on average 20% higher.
In this data WUR does not only count the prices for table potatoes, but also for potato products; think of chips, chips and mashed potatoes. In addition, chilled potato products are also being looked at. In the Netherlands, approximately 375.000 tons of table potatoes are purchased on an annual basis.
The consumer price index for December amounts to 129 points, an increase of approximately 20% in 1 year. The price for the farmer is 175% higher, while the price for the producer is only 7% higher. That is not very surprising, because many potatoes are grown under contract and the free market prices have less influence. The doubling of the price is therefore also relative, because few of the barely 7.000 potato growers really benefit from this.
Stable price
De Supermarket Scanner also keeps track of the price of fresh potatoes in 7 large Dutch supermarkets (including Jumbo and Albert Heijn). What is striking is a fairly stable price trend. At the beginning of last year, that price fluctuated from €1,07 per kilo to €1,33 in mid-May. From the new harvest, the price level is stable; 1 kilo of potatoes is around €1,40 per kilo.
The price level of the offers, on the other hand, fluctuates quite a bit. Despite a slightly higher price level, there is a lot of support. At the turn of the year, 1 kilo on offer cost only €0,40.
