Where relatively the most seed potatoes grow?

27 May 2019 - Eric de Lijster - 6 comments

It is clear to a little potato connoisseur which Dutch municipality has the most hectares of seed potatoes in absolute terms. The question: in which municipality, in relative terms, the most seed potatoes grow? is a bit more difficult to answer. A new Top 5 of Boerenbusiness, which is compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), provides insight into this.

Figures from the 2018 Agricultural Census show that the municipality of Heerhugowaard has by far the most seed potatoes, compared to the total arable area within the municipal boundaries. Heerhugowaard has 223 hectares of seed potatoes, which is 71,4% of the total potato area.

'Most seed potatoes in the Northern Netherlands'
"In the Netherlands, seed potatoes grow on 8,5% of the arable acreage," reports Cor Pierik, head of agriculture at Statistics Netherlands. "For the most part, this cultivation takes place in the northern regions." After Heerhugowaard, 5 Frisian municipalities follow: Ferwerderadiel (43,6%), Leeuwarden (42,5%), Dongeradeel (42,1%), De Fryske Marren (41,2%) and Súdwest-Fryslân (37%).

Most seed potatoes are grown in the Noordoostpolder: 7.313 hectares in 2018, which is good for 27,1% of the arable acreage in that municipality. The municipality of Hollands Kroon is in second place in absolute terms, with 2 hectares (4.146% of the acreage).

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

uh, yeah? If I use some logical reasoning, the rotation in seed potatoes is 1 in 3 on suitable soil, so in the municipalities with a higher than 33% share of arable land, grassland is rented annually to grow seed potatoes. Without mentioning the total area of agricultural land (including grassland), this is a meaningless figure. Although I doubt whether that yields a meaningful figure with the grassland?

Goeree Overflakkee only 1,4% of the arable acreage will have to be about 30% has been this way for 40 years and the best and most beautiful potatoes still grow there!

I do not believe that GO is located in Flevoland, so the article is not just meaningless fake news, but also groundworm has its head in sand.

sorry it says seed potatoes must put on glasses
Cor Pierik 28 May 2019
Goeree Overflakkee mainly contains ware potatoes (3600 ha), arable vegetables (2300 ha), grain (2650 ha) and sugar beet (1600). So relatively few seed potatoes!!! See numbers behind this link:
