After the first field inspection, the situation does not appear to be dramatic

June 19, 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 4 comments

The first field inspection by the NAK inspection service shows that the situation in the seed potatoes is not dramatic. Although only 33 hectares have been downgraded or rejected, the real picture appears to be a little more nuanced.

The reduction percentage is currently 0,3%, compared to 2,6% in this period last year. About 40% of all plots have had the inspection. However, these percentages are not everything. "Many aphids were detected very early on. The growers have now also been informed. The low percentages are therefore mainly because the first inspection is orientating," reports Jan Eggo Hommes of the NAK.

Standards go up
In the next inspection, the standards for varietal purity and virus will be higher, which means that the percentage is expected to increase. However, Hommes does not expect the percentage to rise sharply. "Usually there is a lot of disapproval on Erwinia, but it is calm in that area, although a weather change can cause change."

When it comes to the virus, the concerns still remain. "Last year's high reduction percentage gives a bad starting point. The first plants that are affected by virus have already been found. Still, it is no drama in the field," concludes Hommes.

Ridiculous!!
exploratory inspection, everyone knows that if you have a virus plant, growth stagnates.
Especially with the rain of the past week, 2 or 3 floors of foliage easily pops on the potatoes and all the virus plants crawl underneath.

If it has to be done that way, it is better to inspect 10% randomly, just like with grass seed and wheat.

Just let them give advice and pick leaves at the last GPS stratified inspection and see what the virus pressure is before injecting dead, follow-up checks can then be abolished as far as I'm concerned, that does not provide reliable data.
You can no longer respond.
