MARS: Potato harvest scores below average

27 August 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 24 comments

In the MARS Bulletin of the month of August, drawn up by the European Commission, the European potato harvest is estimated to be lower in many countries than the average. Heat and drought are the cause of this.

Nearly all crops harvested in the fall experience yield reductions. In addition to potatoes, this includes sugar beet and maize. France and Poland are especially mentioned in the bulletin, because the drought damage here is extreme. In addition, the Benelux is also mentioned.

Potato harvest below average.
The average potato harvest in Europe is estimated by MARS to be 3,1% lower than the 5-year average. This means a yield of 32,7 tons per hectare, compared to 33,8 tons on average. The largest percentage reductions are for Austria (-9,4%), Germany (-8,8%) and Romania (-8,9%). In the bulletin, the Netherlands arrives at a reduction of 2,1%.

Belgium arrives at a reduction of 3,3% and France at 5,6%. In this country 40% can be irrigated, it writes. Despite the restrictions on the abstraction of irrigation water, cultivation has not suffered as a result. Denmark is the only country where yields are above the multi-year average, with a 5,5% increase in yield of 43,1 tons per hectare.

More dramatic than 2018
Compared to last year, potato yields are higher in almost all countries, because 2018 turned out to be dramatically bad. Poland is an exception to this. There the yield is almost 6% below last year and 6,5% below the average. For neighboring Romania, this is even 16% under 2018. Many potato plots here suffered from phytophthora due to warm and humid weather in July.

Due to ample rainfall in the United Kingdom and Ireland, these crops are doing well there, although there are problems with diseases due to the wet and sweltering weather. Locally, water damage has occurred in the plots.

That's something different than what they show me at the VTA!!! If you can believe that, there will be a great harvest and we can put on the life jackets
Vta member 27 August 2019
Vta trial is mainly in Flevoland south west and Zeeland area.
Most fields have had multiple irrigations and many innovators who have done well in these regions.
Large mounds grow on sandy soils and areas without rain.
Vta results are therefore not representative for the large potato area.
Regrowth will also be minimal in the vta areas due to the warm weather.
realist 27 August 2019
what regrowth?? here in the west the plots have been sampled dead for weeks half in the 30 tons

It's all about the money. now we are being told that there will be enough potatoes. at Interpom we were also told that there would be too few seed potatoes... too many people are dependent and believe everything from the industry...

Is there already a shortage in seed potatoes? Much below average yields, they are likely to get expensive. Is there already some effective bintje trading being done?
January 27 August 2019
Last year it turned out that there was sufficient seed potatoes. I can tell you there is certainly enough this year.

Since when is Romania a neighbor of Poland?
walloon 28 August 2019
there will be so much less when everyone thinks, too short of pagers..
Narcos 28 August 2019
Next year, just have more plants, it will be the third year in a row of poor cultivation.
Just put 25% less acreage, sell less in advance and irrigate if possible and necessary.
Better 45 tons for 25ct than 35 tons for 10ct as is now the case.

who is talking about 10 cents then you don't understand the game completely just don't give an offer it will automatically go up in the air, you can already get 15.50 kg for poland, it is very disappointing everywhere the area expansion in the eu 5 countries has already 2 x doubled so there are just a lot less pagers than in other years and the processing has increased enormously export is running like crazy so....

Let everyone talk and steer your own course, potatoes will disappoint slightly better than last year but not much.
act 29 August 2019
laapc, i agree with you 100%. sail your own course and do what you feel like. In our area, the yield is less than last year. But in the EU5 countries I also think that the average will be slightly better than last year but still below average
Drent 29 August 2019
wait a minute, been bad for years?? then you have done something wrong, only 2017 less for me, 2016 and 2018 were good years, but some are never satisfied
JAAP 30 August 2019
A gallant drent is happy with every cent.
In the southwest, we are not satisfied as long as the cost price is not achieved. per hectare.
Drent 30 August 2019
can you still not achieve the cost price with a potato price of 25 cents? Then you're doing something wrong.
also belgian 31 August 2019
Yes, I don't understand that either.... 16 and 18 were beautiful years. Of course everything stands and falls with net chips per ha and there are major differences this year more than ever... And something is not right somewhere that we have to bear all natural risks and this can lead to major regional differences in the wallet
peta 31 August 2019
I can imagine that in some years you run badly while others shout Hosanna. If you were in the flooding area in 2016 with a lot of water damage and as a result you only deliver 30 tons net with a lot of misery, then it is well below cost. the same applies if you first drown and then dry up as in the zw in 2018. Then you don't have the tons. That is why it is damn important to maintain a large crop rotation so that your expensive crops perform optimally and that is not possible with 1 in 3 or 1 in 4! But in Belgium they will find that out automatically in 10 years, then the fontanes will also do in good years but just 50 tons instead of 65.

Big equal pet. You're already starting to see it. Solves its own well... Keep 1 on 6 or 7 of bintjes super satisfied. I put less than my neighbor I am satisfied with that ... Mass is the cash register he says .... What is on my court is mine I answer ... Usually end of conversation
also belgian 31 August 2019
Don't you also have a loan, he answers, yes, I say healthy thinking... Always watch TV in the evening, pay attention to borrowing money also costs money... And try to invest what I earn in my company and not the to be the financier of a new freezer for my chip factory... He turned and was gone...
smart farmer 1 September 2019
farmers have to run fries factory themselves
Piet de B..... started alone in his shed
Cees M... started alone too
the Belgian fries barons themselves started with a small factory, today they are among the largest fries producers in the world
so why not the farmers today?
