From March to June, sales of potatoes and potato products in the United States rose sharply. This is according to figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The turnover of table potatoes increased by almost 50%.
Sales of dehydrated potatoes, which have been dehydrated, actually increased by almost 60% in dollar terms and almost 50% in volume. All potato products added together, the 13-week increase in sales from March to June also reached double digits, compared to the same period in 2019.
Only red potatoes and potatoes of the fingerling type did not record higher turnover figures. The sharply increased turnover of potatoes and potato products is the highest in the last 5 years in the United States.
Cook more at home
A similarly changing consumption pattern can be seen in Canada, as a result of the loss of the French fries flow to the catering industry. Chip sales have increased by almost a quarter in volume since the start of the corona crisis. The sale of table potatoes also rose sharply, because much more is being cooked and consumed at home due to the corona crisis.
