Trial harvesting Aviko follows the line of 2016

4 August 2020 - Kimberly Bakker

Due to the growing weather, the potato crops are generally very vital, as the first trial harvesting figures from Aviko Potato showed last week. What do the second trial harvesting data show?

The first test harvesting figures from Aviko Potato - those last week have been announced - indicate an average potato harvest. The figures from week 31 show that the yield continues to follow the trend of the years 2016 and 2019, with a yield of just over 30 tons per hectare. It is clearly visible that the increase in kilos between the first and second test harvest this year is slightly flatter than in those two years. This means that the potatoes, despite last week's favorable weather, have not grown extremely fast.

Although the first yields are the same as in 2016, the potato futures market is not (yet) following that trend. In 2016, the price in week 31 was between €18,00 and €16,90 per 100 kilos, while in 2020 this is only €5,80 to €7,10 per 100 kilos. However, the futures market now appears to have started to rise, which corresponds to the situation in 2016. In that year too, it became dry and warm at this time of year.

The futures market is trading lower than in 2016, although an increase appears to have begun.

Groan slightly down
In addition, the second test harvesting data from Aviko Potato shows that the average size of the sampled plots has again weakened slightly. While a record grossness was reached before week 30, this figure is now in line with 2017: around 70%. As we last week also described, this seems to indicate a lower tuber number than average (especially in the plots with Innovator and Agria).

The lower coarse percentage is not necessarily special, as it is often visible during trial harvests. After all, this percentage often depends on the location in the field where the sample is taken. Finally, the underwater weight (owg) has increased slightly and is around 31 grams for week 345.

Average harvest
On balance, no shocking developments are visible in Aviko Potato's trial harvesting data. The harvest figures still seem to be heading for an average potato harvest. How the crop grows on the coming heat will respond, will become clear in the coming trial harvest figures.

The yield remains clearly in line with the years 2016 and 2019. Source: Aviko
