Potato grower receives 6 cents corona compensation

5 October 2020 - Niels van der Boom - 8 comments

RVO.nl will shortly start paying out the compensation scheme for ware potatoes. BO Akkerbouw will announce this on Monday 5 October. The first growers receive a compensation of 6 cents per kilo of potatoes.

BO Akkerbouw made calls this summer and autumn to adjust their estimate for the compensation scheme. When it became known that a settlement was being made, a large number of participants signed up. The scheme was heavily oversubscribed. Compensation of €54 million was requested. After tightening up the applications, this amount fell to €47 million, the BO said.

6 cents per kilo
Now that the final amount has fallen below €50 million, RVO.nl can pay out the pre-estimated amount of 6 cents per kilo. Growers can receive up to a maximum of €125.000 in their final allowance. Anyone who has made an application that is above this amount must wait for his or her money.

Arable farmers can submit their final application until the end of this month. Additional supporting documents may be required, especially for high amounts. A self-declaration is required for allowances up to €25.000. Above that – up to €125.000 – a third-party statement is required.

Payment of the compensation also means that a number of potato pools, including those of Aviko Potato and Schaap Holland, can announce their final potato price to the member growers. Earlier this year, only a provisional price was paid. Not every potato pool opted for this.

I thought the arrangement only applies to beepers delivered from April but I could be wrong

only 2019 harvest from the barn...most early growers could have returned seed potatoes themselves in March and no early cultivation....and sowed grain or maize.....(you saw this coming)

I was also surprised that many growers have buried their heads in the sand with the thought that it will blow over.

I am now also very curious about how the cards will be shuffled for next year, I assume that many growers will take a wait-and-see attitude and that a decision will only be made in March/April next year whether or not a part will be planted.

Much if not everything will depend on how the pandemic develops.

I think the industry will have to show color and come up with a good story/solution otherwise substantially less potatoes will be planted!!!

if not substantially less acreage is planted next year, we will be able to deliver again for €5.
Yields are very ordinary this season, let alone when they are good, such as in 2017.
