Three reasons to pay attention to the potato market now

6 January 2021

Now that the first vaccinations against the coronavirus have been put in place, there is a glimmer of hope and the various markets are coming back to life. Soon the potato processors and traders will set out to secure potatoes for the new season. While prices are likely to be slightly lower, volumes to be committed will also fall.

And then the question arises: what should I do? Do I have to sign anyway, should I grow fewer potatoes or should I perhaps start growing more freely? And what role can the futures market play in my strategy? This last option certainly seems to play an important role next season. Here are three reasons for this:

  1. The futures market hedges price risks.
  2. The futures market is flexible in hedging. After all, you can see it off every day.
  3. The price on the futures market is clearly higher than the contract prices (the futures market for 2021/2022 stands at €15 per 100 kilos).

More than ever, we are approaching an important time. Just like last year, it will not be an easy time. But this time with more insight into what we can expect and how we can respond to this in order to achieve an economically healthy result and achieve a return.
