The North-Western European Potato Growers (NEPG) started on a new basis from January 1. The British interest group AHDB has left the NEPG. A new chairman and secretary have also been appointed.
The Dutchman Victor Phaff has stepped down as secretary. He is currently replaced by the Belgian Daniel Ryckmans. Ryckmans has been working for the Belgian potato organization Fiwap for more than 25 years and took up his position as secretary on 1 January. Phaff has been active in the then informal group of sector representatives and growers since 1999. Phaff led the informal and free structure to a more organized and structured institution. Jaap Botma, the current VTA chairman, is the first NEPG chairman to be elected as such. He officially started as chairman on 1 July 2020 and will hold this position for at least another 12 months. The NEPG now consists of the following organisations: ABS, Fiwap, FWA and PCA from Belgium, REKA from Germany, UNPT from France and VTA from the Netherlands.
New Age
After more than 20 years of growth and development, the potato world shook to its foundations in 2020 as a result of the corona crisis. NEPG thinks that the potato acreage could decrease significantly this season. Markets and prices may take months to fully recover. NEPG sees itself a role as information collector. Information on, among other things, free potato prices, contract prices and conditions, area and production statistics and processing activities remain important for growers in the 4 affiliated countries.
