The DCA Potato Bingo has struggled through the dramatic 2020-2021 potato sales season undisturbed. The potato futures market was traded on the basis of complete arbitrariness. Despite rock bottom prices, this does not result in the lowest price.
With just under 5 trading weeks to go before the April contract on the EEX potato futures market, the DCA Potato Bingo has completed its sales moments for the 2020 harvest year. The result is €8,14 per 100 kilos. That's not a record low. After the 2014 harvest year, a price of €7,27 was recorded. The course of the futures market was then very similar to this season, with a revival at the start of this year.
Revival save price
Potato Bingo has been able to benefit from this revival, which has further improved the result. The lowest bingo result of this season was achieved for the period week 44-49, with €5,50. Only in 2015 it was slightly lower at 10 cents. The harvest was the only one that achieved prices above €10 this season. The sales result after harvest is therefore, not surprisingly, even lower, at €7,32.
How does the bingo sales result compare with other sales tools? If we look at the averages of the PotatoNL category 1 listing, the Cash Settlement and the DCA PAT Index, it becomes clear that bingo stands head and shoulders above the rest. Last season the PotatoNL stock market prize still outpaced bingo. The difference between the quotations in 2020 is very large.
Dramatic figures
With 5 trading weeks to go, the Cash Settlement has not yet been completed, but with an average result of €3,98 it is clear that it will probably not make the difference in bingo much smaller. The PAT Index is €3,91 and the PotatoNL quotation is €4,14. These are simply dramatically bad figures.
It may be good news that the random sales method has performed significantly better. Bingo has a predictive value for the potato pools that usually achieve their results in June. After all, they also average their sales over the season. If the pool managers have chosen to record a large volume early in the season, this supports the end result. Waiting for higher price levels only paid off somewhat in February. It is possible that a rabbit can be pulled out of the hat in the tail, but the question is whether Polish people can afford this risk.
New draw in April
Next month the bingo game will be taken out of the closet to - completely randomly - determine the sales moments for the 2021 harvest year. A total of 6 balls will be drawn for the 9 week sales periods. The drawn ball has a date on it. The closing price of the futures market on that day is decisive for Potato Bingo. All results together form the average result.
