Averis Seeds BV, a subsidiary of Royal Avebe, will work together with Solynta on the hybrid breeding of starch potato varieties. According to Avebe, new varieties can be developed faster with hybrid breeding techniques than is possible with conventional breeding.
Solynta has been developing Hybrid True Potato Seed for over 12 years. Because hybrid techniques allow faster breeding, it is easier to respond to potato diseases and other challenges. With the faster development of better varieties, the use of crop protection products can be reduced, yields increased and nutrient absorption improved.
Targeted breeding
The hybrid technique makes it easier to control the improvements in varietal characteristics. The desired characteristics can therefore be crossed in more quickly. This results in a shorter development time. Johan Hopman is delighted with the collaboration. "Now that the successful results of hybrid breeding in ware potatoes are visible, it is time to also use this technique for the breeding of starch potato varieties," says Johan Hopman Breeding & Research manager at Averis in a press release.
According to Edwin van der Vossen, Director of Research & Development of Solynta, Averis' specific knowledge of properties and genetics for starch potato cultivation comes together with Solynta's hybrid breeding platform, resulting in a continuous stream of increasingly better varieties for Avebe's growers.
