The Belgian Test Center for Potato Cultivation (PCA) has announced the results of the first trial harvesting of the early variety Amora. The development is lagging behind the long-term average, but the growth is still in the crop.
The yield on the 8 sampled plots was between 5 and 93 tons per hectare on July 15, after an average of 37 growing days. The average yield is 23 tons per hectare. On 3 of the plots the yield remained below 20 tons per hectare. A plot was irrigated once on June 14 and the yield was 1 tons per hectare. The yield in the chip size (37 op) was 50 tons on average. On 9 plots this is more than 3 tons per hectare.
PCA has had Amora practice plots for 9 years and the average yield after 93 growing days is 34 tons per hectare. Looking at the date, the yield is 9 tons per hectare behind the average. As far as size 50 potatoes are concerned, the long-term average is 24 tons per hectare. The PCA does note that there is hardly any ripening of the crop.
Average to many potatoes per plant
The number of potatoes per plant varies. The plot planted with seed potatoes in size 28/35 has 8,6 tubers per plant, slightly lower than the 10,4 tubers in the long-term average. In the plots planted with uncut seed potatoes in size 35/45, this is 13,8 potatoes. That is almost equal to the long-term average of 14 potatoes per plant. The coarse seed potatoes have 14,2 tubers on a plant, compared to the long-term average of 12,9 potatoes per plant. There are major differences between the plots, ranging from 11,4 to 19,4 potatoes per plant on the irrigated plot.
