"We think we have achieved a decent result in a difficult year," says Dirk van de Water, responsible for the purchase and sale of consumption potatoes at Q-potato. "But we have now had two lean seasons. That has to change if we want to keep potato cultivation interesting for our arable farmers."

Van de Water is moderately positive about the coming season. "We see an area shrinkage of approximately 5% in Northwestern Europe. It remains to be seen what the test grubbing-ups will do in the coming weeks, but a harvest above the multi-year average does not seem likely if we continue the trend of the first trial grubbing-ups in seed potatoes. In addition, there is drought in the northwest of the US, which offers opportunities for European chip exports to Asia. However, you notice that corona is still putting a brake on the market."

In addition to the pool, Q-potato growers can also contract part of the harvest in advance. The company does not offer click contracts, but growers can benefit from the futures market in another way. Through the potato growers' association Q-potato, pool participants can invest between €5.000 and €50.000, money that is used as cover on the futures market. The grower receives 5% interest on this and an additional premium is paid on the basic price of the pool of €0,25 per 100 kilos. Van de Water: "We have been offering this option for 4 years now and have noticed that there is increasing interest in it among our growers."
