NAK completes 2nd inspection, relatively little reduction

28 July 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

In the field inspection of the seed potatoes, the second inspection has largely been completed. The reduction percentage is 30% until week 12,3. About 4.300 hectares have been given permission to destroy the foliage and 1.100 hectares have their foliage destroyed.

At 63%, bacterial disease is the main cause of reduction in seed potatoes, according to data published by the NAK inspection service on Tuesday 27 July. Bacterial disease is followed by mosaic with 23% and 14% has been reduced for other reasons.

The reduction rate is lower than in 2020 and 2019 when it was 12,8% and 14,5% respectively. 1,5% of the seed potatoes were rejected this year. That is more than last year when 1,2% were disapproved, but less than in 2019 with 2,2% disapproval. The regions North II (sandy soils) and South score above average in the percentage that has been reduced, while North I (clay soils) and Central do better than average. With regard to the percentage of rejection, Noord I does significantly better than the other regions with 0,9%.

Screening governance structure
In addition to the progress of the field inspection, the board and management of the NAK announced their intention to have an external expert look at the organization. The reason for this advisory assignment is to ensure that the organization is properly aligned with practice. The fact that the director will reach retirement age in 4 years also plays a role in this.
