Lamb Weston/Meijer builds new Kruiningen factory

27 July 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 13 comments

Potato processor Lamb Weston/Meijer (LWM) is going to build a new chips factory in Kruiningen. This will expand the existing location.

The company announced this today (Tuesday, July 27). The construction of the new factory requires an investment of approximately €200 million. The annual production capacity will be increased by 180.000 tons with the expansion. If everything goes according to plan, the new factory will be operational in the first quarter of 2023.

Less energy and water consumption
LWM's sustainability agenda was taken into account in the design of the factory. The potatoes are processed with a minimum of water and energy. "This new factory at our location in Kruiningen not only reflects our ambition to meet the growing demand for high-quality potato products in a sustainable way, it also demonstrates our commitment to our customers and growers by building on the benefits of this region" , said Marc Schroeder, CEO of LWM, in a press release. "The state-of-the-art factory will use less water and energy and allow us to produce with fewer emissions. This is crucial for our sustainability strategy. This investment strengthens Lamb Weston/Meijer's global position and makes our growth ambition, new product innovation and improved customer service."

Is there never anyone who asks the question how one thinks to get the potatoes?

Simple, though: by taring less, more potatoes remain.

Due to contract prices that give French fries potatoes a slightly higher balance than the wheat balance. More is not necessary. Farmers in the Netherlands and Belgium need little or no compensation for their effort and risks

I don't believe Belgians, that taring is the same in the factory as in the room where you get paid

For an investment of €200 million you can still build a line of chips, but not a complete factory?
Also considering the amount of 180.000 tons

@ikke, do you have experience with this buyer? My experience is that taring is done in a very correct way.

they only have a lot of salt in the salt bath at lwm in my opinion .... a lot of floaters there ... while that in tilburg (where potatoes also go from the same box) is not ..

maybe a salt correction needed due to the salty air in Zeeland compared to Brabant :-)

you mean a price correction..contract prices down this season, cultivation costs/risks for growers up, then we'll see what's left below the line.... know your cost price I'd say!

potato growers are the modern wage slaves, and do not have the guts to grow potatoes for the free market, and as long as they make contracts they will remain wage slaves for the rest of their lives
grain grower 28 July 2021
stop growing potatoes! it's that simple
there is a better balance with grain cultivation, instead of potatoes in recent years. there is also less risk

In 5 years at least 10 new production lines, so about 2 million tons of potatoes are needed : contract prices will have to increase 20%, otherwise they will not have potatoes to run their factories

Potatoes had enough, even if the contract price drops again. Farmers just keep planting, what else can you do? Wheat is nice, but you also have to grow 1:3 to get good yields..
