Potato processor Aviko has announced the results of the first trial harvesting this season. Is the picture comparable with the trial harvesting of the early potatoes?
In week 30, most processors traditionally start trial harvesting before the main harvest. Aviko will once again publish the results on its website this year. The company monitors different varieties and plots in the Netherlands to get an idea of the growth of the potatoes. This week the company published the results of the Fontane variety.
Growth lags behind
The growth up to and including week 30 lags behind other years. That image is in line with the Belgian trial harvests. The average yield is 30 tons per hectare. That is approximately 5 tons below the 5-year average.
The underwater weight (OWG) stands out in a negative way. This is below 320 and therefore lags considerably behind the 5-year average, which is around 360.
The sorting is fairly average at 60% in size 50. In 2016 and 2018 this percentage was lower, while in 2017, 2019 and 2020 it was higher. An explanation for this may be the amount left behind, which makes the potatoes coarser.
