Royal Avebe starts today (Tuesday 17 August) with the potato campaign in the Netherlands. The first potatoes are processed in Gasselternijveen. Processing started last week at the production location in Dallmin, Germany.
Due to the relatively cold month of May, the potatoes have fallen behind in growth compared to recent years, the processor says. "Despite this backlog and the varying damage caused by heavy precipitation during the growing season, many crops are now in good shape," says Arjan de Rooij, director of Agro at Avebe in the statement. "Current moderate temperatures, combined with sufficient rainfall in most regions, are favorable for crop growth. We expect the shortfall to be compensated somewhat in the coming weeks."
Extension
At the location in Gasselternijveen, Avebe has invested heavily in expanding the production capacity for the potato protein Solanic. This product is for human food and is mainly used in the growing market for plant-based foods such as meat and dairy substitutes. A new line has been built for the production of protein for animal feed in Dallmin, Germany. Both production lines will be put into use during this campaign.
The factory in Lüchow will be started up in the week of August 23 and the one in Ter Apelkanaal in the week of August 30. If everything goes according to plan, the campaign will run until mid-March 2022. During that period, the potatoes of approximately 2.300 members will be processed into potato starch and potato protein.
