Major differences in yield between fields

24 August 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

In the trial harvestings of the Belgian PCA, the yield of Bintje lags behind the multi-year average. The spread in yield between the plots is large at both Bintje and Innovator. Just like in previous trial harvestings of other varieties.

Bintje's average yield over 14 plots spread across Belgium is 33 tons per hectare. The 10-year average is 113 tons per hectare after 37 growing days. On 3 plots the yield did not yet exceed 30 tons per hectare, while on 2 more than 40 tons per hectare were already grubbed. As with Fontane, there are major differences between Flanders and Wallonia. The average yield on the Flemish plots was 8 tons higher.

Nice sorting and few numbers
There is also a wide spread in terms of underwater weight (OWG), ranging from 333 grams to 410 grams. The sorting is still on the fine side. On average, 16 tons per hectare is 50 op. The multi-year average is 20 tons per hectare after 113 growing days. On average there are 16 tubers on a chair. That is a low tuber number for the Bintje variety according to the PCA.

In the growing area, mainly poppy tubers are found. Green or rotten tubers are hardly found. Waste in the lots consists mainly of deformed tubers. According to the PCA, this indicates irregular growth and/or the occurrence of overgrowth. The chip quality was excellent on most plots.

In addition to the trial harvesting of Bintje, the PCA also announced the results of the Innovator on 7 plots in Wallonia. After 112 growing days, the average yield of this variety is 34 tons per hectare with a spread of 29 to 41 tons per hectare. 83% of Innovator's potatoes are in the French fries range. The average OWG is 362 grams, slightly above the industry standard of 360 grams. The number of potatoes per plant remains limited to 9 tubers. As far as losses are concerned, Innovator also mainly concerns deformed tubers.

Potato processor Aviko has also announced the results of the test harvesting of week 33. The potato yields are in line with the multi-year average. The sorting is becoming somewhat coarser. The OWG is developing favorably and is now above 370 grams.
