From the new season of the storage potatoes, the Belgian Belgapom is only recording prices for the Fontane variety. For other varieties such as Bintje and Challenger, a weekly 'observation' and 'market vote' are published, but no official listing anymore.
Because the share of contract potatoes has risen sharply in recent years, Belgapom also adds a graph with the average contract price for Fontane.
"The potato world is constantly changing," says CEO Christophe Vermeulen in the message. "Last season, Fontane was grown on more than half of the Belgian potato area. Fontane is by far the most traded on our market. That is why the Belgapom Administrative Body unanimously decided that from this season onwards we will only officially list Fontane."
