The Dutch Potato Organization (NAO) is celebrating the kick-off of the stamppot season this week. This Dutch dish seems to be increasingly popular, because last winter the consumption of (slightly) floury potatoes increased by 3% to more than 2,5 million kilos. This trend is expected to continue.
Recent figures from research agency Nielsen, requested by the NAO, show that in the winter of 2020/2021 more than 2,5 million kilos of (slightly) floury potatoes - or stew potatoes - were consumed. It is an increase of 3% compared to a year earlier. Nielsen expects this trend to continue this year. Of all kinds of stew, kale is the big favorite. About 34% of the Dutch prefer to eat this. This is followed by endive (17%), sauerkraut (17%) and stew (17%).
Opening of the stamppot season
The reason that the Dutch Potato Organization has requested the figures is the kick-off of the stamppot season. "We celebrate the start of the stamppot season, because we know that the Dutch like to consume potatoes in the winter. On the one hand, the potato builds on an age-old Dutch tradition and on the other, it is a hypermodern global food product," says Dick Hylkema, director of the NAO .
The Dutch are real potato eaters anyway; especially families with children. About 41% of the families with children in the age group from zero to four years have the potato on the menu two to three times a week. In families with children between the ages of five and twelve, even 67% indicate that they consume potatoes six times a week. The most popular vegetables to eat with are green beans (56%), cauliflower (50%) and broccoli (45%).
