The potato season is heading towards ending in a bad way for the long-term keepers. For the start of the new season, the cards seem to be shuffled differently. At least that is apparent from the first prize for the machine-harvested new potatoes that PCA published this week.
"The price for early potatoes is usually €20," PCA writes in this week's market report. There is still little trade in the potatoes of the new harvest and the atmosphere is calm. The demand mainly comes from peeling companies. The first PCA quotation of early potatoes is therefore a few weeks earlier this year than last year. The price is well above the multi-year average for this time of year.
For the Fontane and Challenger varieties, the price drops further to €12,50 to €15 per 100 kilos. Here too, the mood on the market is calm and there are few transactions. Processors are hardly on the market anymore and the supply is limited to free potatoes from a limited number of growers.
