High reduction percentage of seed potatoes due to bacterial disease

26 July 2022 - Jesse Torringa

The second field inspection in the seed potatoes has almost been completed by the NAK. The reduction percentage in week 28 is above average at 8,29% compared to recent years. Bacterial disease is by far the biggest cause of reductions this year.

At 72%, bacterial disease is the biggest cause of reductions this year, followed by the mosaic virus at 19%. 9% of the reductions are caused by other reasons. 72% is certainly very high compared to the other years. In week 2021 2020 and 28, the reduction percentages were 49% and 30%. The percentage of rejected plots is 0,7%, which is in line with other years in week 28.

In total, the reduction percentage has increased from 6,0% to 8,3% since last week, which is higher than the previous two years. In almost all areas, the percentage of reductions is therefore higher than in other years. The reduction percentage is lowest in the North I (Clay Soils) region, at 6,1%, followed by North II (Sandy Soils) and Central, both with a 9,3% reduction. Area South has the highest percentage of reductions with 10,3%.

The number of hectares where permission has been given for foliage destruction was not disclosed by the NAK this week. Last week (week 27), foliage destruction had already been requested for 1.500 plots. The second field inspection was also completed almost two weeks earlier than last season, when many plots were planted late due to the wet conditions. This year, the growth of the seed potatoes is also slightly ahead of the long-term average. That is also one of the possible reasons why the reduction percentage is higher than in other years.
