The potato processing industry is getting off to a slow start this season. The processing figures for October published today are good but not spectacular. What is striking is that the processing efficiency is relatively high.
In October, the potato processing industry processed 340.800 tons of potatoes. This is evident from the figures published by the Association for the Potato Processing Industry (Vavi). A year earlier, 353.300 tons were processed. Compared to September, the chip factories have taken a step forward and 15.000 more tons were processed. Of the processed potatoes, 127.700 tons came from abroad. That was 137.000 tons a year earlier.
Performance
Last month, 156.600 tons of pre-fried chips and 30 tons of other products were produced. The processing efficiency was 54,8%, which is relatively high. For comparison: 2021 pre-fried fries and 160.700 tons of other products were produced in October 28.100. The processing industry processed 2022 tons fewer potatoes in October 12.500 compared to the same month a year earlier and only 2.200 tons less end product. Due to the relatively high processing yield, the industry therefore needed slightly fewer potatoes.
