Agrico expects a significantly higher price for the 2022 harvest

2 May 2023 - Jesse Torringa - 10 comments

Today (Tuesday 2 May), seed potato trading house Agrico announced the average indication price for seed potatoes. The indication price is considerably higher than in 2021. In addition, all French fries varieties are completely sold out.

The average indication price for the 2022 harvest is €35,50 per 100 kilos. This means that the indication price is €4,50 higher than in 2021. The price is an average of size 28 upwards, all varieties, classes and sizes supplied.

Good yields
Even before the harvest started, it became clear that the yields would be good. The average yield even increased by 4,4 tons to 42,9 tons per hectare in 2022. In addition, the sizes were also finer compared to 2021, so that 55.000 tons more potatoes were available in the seed potato size. According to the cooperative, the total sales volume of the pool has increased by 45.000 tons compared to 2021. The Arizona, Rudolph, Marquis and Fontane varieties are the big risers in terms of sales.

French fries completely sold out
Agrico reports that last year it invested in having seed potatoes available for early export. There is a large increase in the volume to this market. In addition, countries in North Africa also performed well on the market. The demand for French fries varieties was excellent, the cooperative reports. All these varieties were completely sold out.

The situation on the European table market is less positive. Growers in Europe saw the costs of cultivation rise, but the prices did not. They purchased fewer potatoes from this segment. This effect can also be seen in the pool price of these varieties. Agrico has therefore decided to intervene strongly in the areas of a number of European table varieties and to scale down production.

Result
General manager Jan van Hoogen is satisfied with the higher level of the payout price compared to last year. "The national and international market has changed considerably in the past season. We are pleased that Agrico was able to respond well to this, resulting in a good result."

I think that higher price is badly needed to keep the seed potato acreage going. It would be a pity if something we are good at were to shrink too much due to higher consumer prices. It is of great importance for consumer cultivation that sufficient healthy seed potatoes remain available.

trading houses already know they have to go up. most of them don't get their acreage full either. those who said earlier can't say it now even if it has to go up otherwise everyone will grow consumption. otherwise a healthy business a good fries market. at least a declaration of contamination does not cost any money.

Fortunately, they at the office are only somewhat satisfied with the results achieved; the fact that things are then very disappointing on the work floor is apparently of secondary importance. Anyway, soon they will be throwing a party and to have to say in the media that they have not actually baked much of it, is not appropriate at the moment. Think of it this way: A monkey in the circus also claps his hands for his own stupidity!!!! It's really ridiculous.

at least at agrico you still get a decent price for the upper sizes. that is never included with hzpc. although there are not as many as usual this year.

high consumer prices? they are also paid in value once every 1 years.
too sad for words let the fries grower pay his bills for once.

It would be better for Ivo to start growing for another trading company only to find out that it is not hallelujah there either. Arie????, a good price once in ten years?, are you ashamed to say so. You might be better off growing seed potatoes, the payment is more regular and you can always pay your bills as it should be.

You are apparently satisfied with this price, also consider growers from the south of the country, 35t. delivered to 34/35ct. (fontane) makes a twelve thousand euros. you can pay the baker / fishmonger of this, but certainly not a beautiful Steyr.
Finally, costs are skyrocketing and in the past growing year it was more luck than wisdom whether your electricity contract was fixed/variable and whether or not it expired.

I am not a seed potato grower, I just wanted to indicate that the seed potato prices must keep pace with consumption, so as not to lose acreage. The cultivation of seed potatoes is too important for that, both for the Netherlands and for the substantial worldwide export of it. By the way, you don't have to write off that Steijer in 1 year, do you?

then together we come to the conclusion that there should have been a 4 in front of the payout price ;)

a balance of twelve thousand euros does not cover the risks you run.
