Long summer break will not be reflected in processing

Little demand for potatoes and prices are under pressure, that is the story on the potato market at the moment. That was a bit different at the beginning of August when the season kicked off with high prices and processors switched to the new harvest relatively late. This is only reflected to a limited extent in the processing figures for August.

In August, 296.300 tons of potatoes were processed into pre-fried fries and other frozen products, according to figures from the Association for the Potato Processing Industry (Vavi). Dutch processors have processed almost 10.000 tons more potatoes than in August last year. The figure is neatly in line with the five-year average of 295.700 tonnes.

More potatoes from abroad were processed in August compared to last year, namely 134.800 tons last month compared to 124.400 the same month a year earlier. A total of 139.700 tons of pre-fried fries and 25.600 tons of other frozen potato products were made. The processing efficiency is relatively high at 55,8%.
