A late spring and challenging growing season is only partly reflected in Aviko's harvest progress figures. Especially in Belgium, growers are not yet in a hurry to harvest.
In the EU-4 countries plus the UK, the Germans have made the furthest progress with the potato harvest, as Aviko's progress figures from week 41 (last week) show. In Germany, approximately three quarters of the acreage has been harvested. In the UK, 70% of potatoes have been harvested. In the Netherlands and France, harvest progress is around 60%. These are not major deviations compared to the last two seasons in these four countries. Belgium stands out with only 35% of the area harvested. This time last year, 80% of the area had already been harvested.
Within the Netherlands, growers in the Flevopolders and North Holland are in the lead with 80% or more harvested. In the Southwest, the harvest is least advanced, with more than a third harvested. It is striking that in the Southeast and Gelderland the harvest has progressed by 50 and 40% respectively. Growers do not seem to care much about the harvest deadline for potatoes on sand and loess that has been set by the ministry.
In addition to the harvest progress, Aviko also provided an update of the trial harvest figures. They do not show any major changes. The average gross yield in the Netherlands is approximately 60 tons per hectare. The underwater weight has increased slightly and is now above 380 grams.
