Van der Linde slims down the potato branch

3 November 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 23 comments

Aardappelhandel Van der Linde BV will stop contracting for French fries potatoes, it was announced this week. The company from Emmeloord remains active in packaging, exporting and trading potatoes and carrots.

The potato market is changing and cultivation costs have risen enormously in recent years. "Both growers and processors try to cover part of their risk," says Eric van der Linde Boerenbusiness. "With our contracts, we took on part of the price risk on both sides. Because cultivation costs have risen so much and thus also contract prices, we have come to the conclusion that the risks for us as a company are becoming too great to handle at the current rate. to go on."

Tough decision
With the current contract prices of €25 or more, the room downwards has become too large to always be able to support this financially, according to Van der Linde. We always had participation contracts, which was really our showpiece. We have four branches within our family business and we are saying goodbye to one." The decision to stop the chip potato contracts was not taken lightly. "Our grandfather started the chip potato business and for some of our customers I am the third generation to take over. the floor comes. But ultimately it's a business decision."

The current contracts for the 2023 harvest are being completed as agreed and Lamb Weston, Van der Linde's regular customer, would like to continue with the growers.

and that is number 3 who quits in the promised land. what a shambles.

apf stopped eriva stopped and now van der linde

nothing remains. I think the best thing to do is to stop growing yourself.

If I want to be employed, I will look for a job.
I also don't have the cultivation risk

no problem, another link between them... directly with LWM then do business... don't see the advantage of having another link between them, or just grow everything freely...

or just think about the opportunities that the POC offers us,
all of us negotiate together with the various remaining customers
then there must be enough frogs in the POC pond
industry needs us now, keep it that way

Well, that's it, Van de Linde was always a nice player in the market, but has been overtaken by time and the new generation.
There is little choice left. Then let's hear what the farmer has to offer, which, according to my accountant, is very worthwhile.

why where 3 November 2023
and what does POC bring to the negotiating table as coercive instruments?

1 that the growers do not sign (they do anyway)
2 that are then not planted (I put some extra because then they become expensive)
3 that you then go to another processor (when you drive away they have already texted each other and keep the rows closed)

so I don't see it with that poc

That's exactly right with POC, especially now that they should be making noise now that the PotatoNl boys are not even recording normally. Also a bit more vision in the run-up to the new contract round, after all, we are moving to the American model where there is no longer room for the market, which means that companies such as vd Linde etc. will also fail.

Agria is simply free. innovator and fontane won't last long either. then the growers who grow them freely can also make money from those varieties because so far they have not been a big deal.

By then, the chip barons will use another monopoly variety, so that they can control the farmers again

And who do you deliver to?
You have a raw material so you remain dependent.
Your choice is about which risks you want to take and that starts with the choice of growing potatoes.

if there are no contracts or very few, the chip baron will have to look for you
that is wonderful

I think there is another effect happening. It seems nice that some organization provides a price that makes all farmers happy. However, the effect will then be that more product will continuously arrive (here and/or abroad), causing the system to crash. Because what do you do if there is more product than customers can market at the high price level?

agria has been free for about 4 5 years now. and it is still popular. As long as there is nothing better, they will not take another breed. You can also simply grow your own seed potatoes.

I stopped using Agria myself, there was also quite a bit of hassle with quality and such.
Now that the harvest is inside wheat, much of what is left on the land is agria.
Good luck with harvesting in December.

What's wrong with concluding contracts? A tractor or large machine is increasingly made to order. Unsold inventory is simply expensive. It is logical that a chip manufacturer who also has to sell his product, often in advance, wants to know at what price he can/will purchase the raw material. The cowboy days are over if you ask me. Long-term relationships between producer and buyer will increasingly prove their value. If you don't like that, don't sign the contract. No one forces you...

Well, look where we have ended up in the mechanization world. Material is no longer affordable and people still buy it. Matter of supply and demand. The less fixed supply, the better the market will function. Those stupid fries potatoes are no longer free market forces. The revenue model of that cultivation is going out like a candle

and yet the contract price for next year will probably increase. Seed potatoes are becoming more expensive, so I expect the contract price to increase at the same rate as the seed potato price. But you can grow them well if you don't let them sit....
