Explanation required for PotatoNL quotes

14 December 2023

The special growing season of the 2023 harvest year, and especially the final part (harvest period), causes many headaches. This applies not only to growers, but also to the trade and certainly to the processors. The headache is also reflected in the PotatoNL quotations. The blueprint of how a quote is compiled sometimes needs to be adjusted. That is a tough case for the current 2023/24 season.

Grubbing still takes place around Christmas, especially in Belgium (8%) and the Netherlands (6%). The current estimate is that by mid-week 50 in the EU-4 countries (Germany 1% and France 4%), a maximum of 5% still needs to be harvested, which would amount to 1,2 million tons of potatoes. Because harvesting continues to take place, the landing period continues. The already harvested potatoes that have ended up in storage under undesirable conditions, to say the least, can hardly or hardly be seen as a dry product.

In view of the above overview, the quotation committee has decided to divide the various quotations into a 'from the field' and a 'from the barn' quotation, whereby a distinction is made between dry and non-dry potatoes. Almost most of the potatoes that the factories currently process come either directly from the field or from the very short storage where growers have more or less been forced to store the potatoes. These are obviously not dry. In addition, there is supply from parties that are forced to come out of storage earlier and are still processed via a laundry.

Wide price range
Depending on the variety, the market price of these non-dry potatoes (very short storage period and compelling supply) is around the €20 level (Fontane) with a maximum of €22,50 (for example for Innovator). If you look at dry potatoes of the different varieties, much more is paid for them. These potatoes find their way outside the regular EU-4 (Hafpal) French fries processing, such as a French fries processor in Switzerland. In short, it is easy to explain, but it is fair to say that given the circumstances, most potatoes are charged at an average of €20 per 100 kilos or slightly above. Growers with dry potatoes are logically not in the market for those kinds of market prices; then there is much more available outside Hafpal.
